A spate of church vandalism and arson attacks that began in 2020 during the George Floyd riots that caused billions of dollars in damage to homes and businesses, followed by further attacks after the Roe v. Wade abortion ruling was reversed in 2022, has continued into 2025.

1. Iglesia Católica St. Patrick
On March 15, St. Patrick Catholic Church in Wichita, Kansas, announced on its Facebook page that its church had been vandalized. Images of the vandalism show a broken statue and window panes. The Kansas Catholic Conference, which shared pictures of the vandalism, added that the link to a “satanic website was scrawled on a wall.”

The Wichita Police Department announced the day after the attack that a suspect in connection with the vandalism had been taken into custody. The 23-year-old suspect, a male from Saline County, was charged with burglary, criminal damage to property and criminal desecration.

2. Iglesia Bautista Misionera Friendship
In a Facebook post published on March 19, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Southwest District shared images of vandalism at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, that had occurred the previous day. The church building, as well as a bus belonging to the church, were defaced with the number 666 as well as a profane message presumably reading “F— the Lord.”

On March 20, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Southwest District published a follow-up post announcing that two juveniles, a male and a female, had been arrested in connection with the vandalism.

3. Iglesia Clayborn Temple
In April, the former Clayborn Temple Church in Memphis, Tennessee, was severely damaged by an act of arson. Although the church has been closed since 1999, the building is considered a historic site because of its ties to the 1960s Civil Rights Movement.

The Memphis Fire Department provided an update on its investigation into the incident in May, concluding that “the fire was intentionally set [in] the interior of the historic church” and “a person of interest is being sought by Investigators for their possible involvement in this fire.” In the weeks following the act of arson, the building received approximately $1.5 million in donations for its restoration.

4. Iglesia Bautista Liberty
In a Facebook post published on May 1, Liberty Baptist Church in Lanexa, Virginia, announced that “Overnight, our church sign was heavily vandalized.” Images of the damage show the words “Hail Satan” spray-painted on one side of the church’s digital sign, while the other side was desecrated with the word “Lucifer” along with the symbol for the anarchist movement.

A symbol for the anarchist movement was also drawn on the ground outside the property, along with a marker documenting the history of the place of worship.

5. Iglesia Santa Teresa de Calcuta
The chapel at St. Teresa of Calcutta Church, located in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allentown, was targeted by a vandal with an explosive device on May 6. The device, which was centered on the altar near where the Eucharist was exposed, ignited and caused damage to the altar. Damage consisted of a large hole on top of the altar, multiple holes in the stained glass windows and damage to a ceiling tile located above the altar.

Kyle Kuczynski, 32, was arrested on the evening of May 6 in connection with the incident and charged with arson and related offenses.

6. Iglesia Santa Isabel de Hungría
In a statement published July 19, Bishop Mark Eckman of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh announced that St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania, part of the Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, had become the target of “hateful vandalism” in the form of “anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic messages.” Eckman added that the FBI was leading an investigation into the incident.

In a follow-up statement on July 21, the Diocese shared images of the vandalism. The pictures revealed a Star of David spray-painted on a statue of the Virgin Mary, as well as the number 666 spray-painted on a door and graffiti reading “F— the Pagan Vatican” defacing an exterior wall of the church.
